The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement comprises three essential units. This structure ensures you develop a robust theoretical foundation before applying your practical skills in both simulated and real-work environments.
UNIT 1 (Theory): Establishes the core principles, legal responsibilities, and planning methods behind effective assessment.
UNIT 2 (Workplace practical): Assessing occupational competence directly within a learner’s active workplace.
UNIT 3 (Vocational practical): Focuses on assessing vocational skills within a training environment, such as a classroom or simulated workshops.
Each of the three core units is delivered through structured lessons designed to take you from theory to professional practice.
UNIT 1: Understanding the principles and practices of assessment
Learn the fundamental functions of assessment, key concepts like validity and reliability, and your legal responsibilities as an assessor. You will cover how to plan, manage, and continuously improve the assessment process.
UNIT 2: Assess occupational competence in the work environment.
Conduct live assessments of learners directly within their workplace. You will learn to evaluate real-world competence through direct observation, examining work products, witness testimonies, and professional discussions.
UNIT 3: Assess vocational skills, knowledge and understanding.
Apply your knowledge by practically assessing learners in a simulated or training environment. You will master a range of assessment methods, including skills tests, written assignments, projects, and oral questioning.
Our Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA) is delivered through a flexible, remote-first model, expertly supported by targeted live instruction.
While you will complete the majority of your learning independently online, you are fully backed by dedicated tutor support and two interactive, hybrid-live workshops.
Led by highly experienced course tutors, these two live sessions bridge the gap between digital study and real-world assessing. They provide the practical, hands-on skills development required to excel as a qualified assessor, while offering a valuable opportunity to collaborate with peers and receive expert guidance on building your portfolio.
This hybrid approach ensures you receive the essential live interaction needed to master vocational assessment practices, without the commitment of a full, weekly workshop schedule.

QUALIFICATION CRITERIA
Your diploma qualification is awarded based on a comprehensive portfolio of evidence and observed assessments that prove both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Your portfolio is built progressively throughout your learning journey and includes a variety of coursework tasks, worksheets and case study assignments.
A practical assessment journey with your own live learners/peers/colleagues.
The core of this qualification involves assessing two of your own learners. You will conduct a minimum of four assessments in total, which will be observed by your tutor.
Knowledge-Based Assignments: As you begin this qualification, you will ititially complete a detailed (open-book) worksheet for Unit 1, covering the fundamental principles of assessment, ensuring you have the core knowledge required before moving to practical application and any of the observed assessments.
Assessment Planning: You will create detailed assessment plans for your two learners, selecting appropriate methods to meet the criteria for both Units 2 and 3.
Assessing Vocational Skills (Unit 2): You will assess one learner's skills and knowledge in a training environment (e.g., a classroom or workshop), carrying out at least two assessments.
Assessing Occupational Competence (Unit 3): You will assess a second learner's competence in their live work environment, carrying out at least two assessments.
Evidence Collection: You will gather and document a range of evidence, including observations, products of work, questioning, and professional discussions.
Feedback & Record Keeping: You will provide constructive feedback to your learners and maintain accurate, standardised assessment records.
